Description

Sonic & Knuckles was conceived as the direct continuation of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, with both titles originally intended to form a single, larger game. Due to time constraints and a planned promotional tie‑in, the project was split into two cartridges. Sonic & Knuckles was released worldwide in October 1994, but released in Australia just over a month after.

The story resumes immediately after the events of Sonic 3. Dr. Robotnik’s Death Egg crashes once again onto Angel Island, and Sonic must prevent him from seizing the Master Emerald to relaunch it. For the first time, Knuckles the Echidna is fully playable in the main game. Sonic and Knuckles each have their own routes through the stages, with Knuckles’ abilities to glide and climb walls opening alternate paths.

The game introduced Sega’s innovative “lock‑on technology”: the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge featured a top slot allowing players to connect earlier Sonic games. Linking with Sonic 3 produced the full intended experience, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, with all 14 Chaos Emeralds, save functionality, and the complete story arc. Connecting with Sonic 2 unlocked Knuckles in Sonic 2, while linking with the original Sonic the Hedgehog generated the endless “Blue Sphere” special stage.

On its own, Sonic & Knuckles featured four new Zones: Mushroom Hill, Flying Battery, Sandopolis, Lava Reef; plus the climactic Hidden Palace, Sky Sanctuary, Death Egg, and Doomsday Zones. The game was praised for its level design, replay value, and the novelty of lock‑on technology, though some critics noted that without Sonic 3 it felt shorter than expected.

Sonic & Knuckles sold strongly, with combined sales of Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles reaching around 4 million worldwide. It is remembered as the finale of the 16‑bit Sonic era and the conclusion of the “Death Egg saga.”
