6-Button Controller
An enhanced gamepad introduced in 1993 to address the growing demands of fighting games and arcade conversions on the Mega Drive.
Bundled in Set
Description
The Sega 6-Button Controller retained the familiar rectangular form factor but added three extra face buttons (X, Y, Z) above the traditional A, B, C layout, along with a Mode button that allowed compatibility with older titles by disabling the upper row. The D‑pad was slightly refined for smoother diagonals, and the overall shell was made more compact than the original 3‑button pad, giving it a lighter, more ergonomic feel.
Its development was closely tied to the release of Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition, which required more inputs than the standard controller could provide. Sega designed the pad to meet Capcom’s specifications, ensuring that the home version could replicate arcade controls. Commercially, the 6‑Button Controller was a success: it became the preferred pad for fighting games and many later action titles, and its design influenced Sega’s subsequent controllers, including the Saturn pad. Today it is remembered as one of the most comfortable and responsive controllers of its generation, prized by enthusiasts for its precision and compact design.
