A multi-event sports title based around the 1992 Summer Olympics and notably the first game to have official Olympics licensing and branding.
Description
Olympic Gold coincides with the Barcelona Summer Games and holds the distinction of being the first officially licensed video game of the Olympic Games. The game features seven distinct events: the 100m dash, 110m hurdles, hammer throw, archery, pole vault, 200m freestyle swimming, and 3m springboard diving.
The gameplay is a classic example of the “button-masher” genre typical of early 90s sports titles. For track and swimming events, success depends on your ability to rapidly alternate between buttons to build and maintain speed. However, the game adds variety by introducing more technical mechanics for other disciplines; archery requires careful timing against a wobbling cursor and wind speeds, while diving and pole vaulting demand precise coordination and specific button sequences rather than raw speed.
Visually, the game was well-regarded for its era, featuring clear sprite animations and a colourful presentation that captured the atmosphere of the Spanish games. Players can choose from three difficulty levels: Club, National, and Olympic, and can compete in a full Olympic circuit, a customised ‘Mini-Olympics’, or individual training sessions. While simple by modern standards, its competitive multiplayer mode and the inclusion of official Olympic branding (including a cheeky Coca-Cola sponsorship in the European version) made it a staple for sports fans on the 8-bit console.
Unlike many titles of its era, there are many regional variations. Different SKUs for the PAL version reflect various language releases. The Australian version uses the UK software but in a modified package with localised Olympic branding. This release also had several variants, in different case types and some including a localised booklet of Barcelona Games information and local athletes.
