Double Hawk

An energetic, arcade-style gallery shooter remembered for bringing frantic, Cabal-inspired action to the 8-bit era and for serving as another robust PAL-exclusive in the console’s library.

Description

Double Hawk is a PAL-exclusive port of Sega’s 1989 arcade title, captures a specific late-80s action movie aesthetic, reflecting a design direction heavily inspired by titles like Cabal and Blood Bros., where players control a commando viewed from behind, dodging incoming fire while simultaneously aiming a reticle deep into the screen.

The gameplay experience is built around a challenging, multi-directional crosshair system. Players must independently manage the left-to-right movement of their character at the bottom of the screen to avoid projectiles, while simultaneously driving an on-screen crosshair to shoot enemy soldiers, tanks, and helicopters. The core progression relies on rapid reflexes and the strategic deployment of limited screen-clearing grenades. A major selling point of the cartridge is its simultaneous two-player cooperative mode, allowing two commandos to share the screen and coordinate fire against overwhelming enemy waves, which drastically elevates the arcade feel of the home port.

On a technical level, the development was defined by the inherent difficulty of translating a fast-paced gallery shooter to a standard D-pad controller. A major technical positive was the implementation of a dedicated “duck and shoot” mechanic, which locks the player character in place to allow for faster, more precise aiming of the crosshair—a vital workaround for the lack of an arcade-style trackball or light gun. However, the game faced notable technical negatives when pushed to its limits. During two-player cooperative sessions, the sheer volume of on-screen sprites—including two player characters, two crosshairs, multiple enemies, and incoming fire—causes the Master System hardware to buckle, resulting in severe sprite flicker and slowdown that can frequently obscure incoming hazards.

Upon release, Double Hawk received generally positive reception from regional publications, heavily praised for its addictive cooperative mode and satisfying explosive action. Magazine reviewers lauded the detailed, destructible background environments and the massive, screen-filling boss encounters, though they frequently cautioned readers about the steep difficulty curve and the thumb-cramping nature of the dual-movement controls. Retrospectively, it is viewed as a highly competent and engaging arcade port, remembered by collectors as a quintessential example of the action-heavy titles that defined the Master System’s later years.
