Manual: Global Defence

グローバル・ディフェンス

A fixed‑screen shooting game built around defending the planet from waves of incoming missiles and satellites. A spare manual for the game.

Description

Global Defense is a port of the arcade title SDI: Strategic Defense Initiative. The game presents a simple scenario in which the player controls a planetary defence system against incoming threats. The screen shows Earth at the centre, with hostile objects approaching from all directions. The player rotates a crosshair around the planet and launches missiles to intercept targets before they strike. The theme is straightforward: survival through constant vigilance, with the player cast as guardian of the world against relentless attack.

The game adapts the arcade original’s trackball for precise aiming with a dual‑control scheme where one input rotates the targeting reticle and another fires defensive missiles. The challenge comes from managing speed and accuracy, as threats appear in increasing numbers and at varied angles. Later stages introduce faster projectiles and more complex patterns, requiring precise timing and anticipation. The design recalls earlier arcade defence titles such as Missile Command, but adapts the formula to the home hardware.

Global Defense was noted for its difficulty and for offering a home console take on the missile interception genre. Reviews at the time were mixed, with some praising the tension and others criticising the repetitive gameplay. Retrospectively the title is a competent adaption. It loses some of the precision and experience of the arcade’s trackball controls, but retains the core tension of intercepting incoming threats around Earth. Although repetitive in structure, it can provide a challenging pace, with later stages demanding sharp accuracy.
