Choplifter

A side‑scrolling rescue shooter that put the player in control of a combat helicopter, blending arcade action with a humanitarian objective.

Description

Choplifter was originally developed by Dan Gorlin for the Apple II and later ported by Sega. It casts players as a helicopter pilot tasked with extracting hostages from enemy territory while navigating hostile airspace and ground fire. The game’s core tension lies in balancing aggression with precision: players must destroy threats without harming civilians, manage fuel, and carefully position under pressure.

Its design reflects early attempts to merge reflex-driven gameplay with moral stakes, where success depends not just on survival but on how many lives are saved. The Master System version retains the original’s structure while enhancing visual clarity and responsiveness, making it a formative example of action games that incorporate humanitarian goals and not just fictional abstractions into arcade mechanics.
