3-D Glasses

3-Dメガネ

A pair of helmet‑style goggles that used alternating red‑monochrome imagery to create a perceived depth effect, interfacing with compatible game cartridges to present foreground and background planes. They were powered through the console and worn like spectacles to view the intended 3‑D visuals.

Description

The Master System 3‑D glasses are a wearable stereoscopic peripheral that create depth by alternately presenting red‑monochrome images to the left and right eyes in synchrony with specially authored cartridges; they interface to the console through the cartridge or a dedicated connector and rely on timed shutters rather than full‑colour stereoscopy. Development focused on delivering a convincing parallax effect using low‑cost electronics and limited palette, encouraging first‑party and third‑party developers to design foreground/background switching and depth‑based puzzles.

While technically innovative for its cost bracket, the 3‑D glasses achieved only niche commercial success: they impressed at demonstrations and in specialist titles but required dedicated cartridges and produced a monochrome image, limiting broad adoption and preventing the peripheral from becoming a mainstream selling point.
