Super Tennis
グレートテニスA sports simulation distilled into its simplest form, presenting competitive play through minimal design and accessible mechanics.
Description
Super Tennis provides a straightforward console tennis experience but the game’s pleasure lies in its balance of authenticity and accessibility, offering a faithful yet simplified version of tennis for home audiences. It was one of the earliest tennis titles on the Master System yet adhered to real rules and provide multiplayer options.
Players control their chosen character across the court, striking with either fast shots or lobs, while volleys and smashes become possible when positioned near the net. Matches follow authentic scoring conventions, with sets and games. Difficulty and speed settings allow adjustment, and multiplayer support enables singles or doubles competition, extending the game’s appeal beyond solitary play. Graphically although the environments were clear, character sprites were modest and animation was simple.
Although it has limited depth compared to later sports simulations, it was a formative entry in Sega’s early sports catalogue. It saw the Master System take a serious approach to simulating sports, through capturing the essence of tennis in digital form. An early step in Sega’s pursuit of console sports authenticity.
