Sega Touring Car Championship was Sega’s attempt to capture the excitement of touring car racing, following the success of Daytona USA and Sega Rally Championship. The arcade version ran on Sega Model 2 hardware, delivering smooth 3D graphics and detailed car models.

The game features several licensed cars from real‑world touring competitions, including the Toyota Supra, Opel Calibra, and Mercedes‑Benz AMG C‑Class. Each car has distinct handling characteristics, with physics tuned to emphasise realism compared to Sega’s more arcade‑style racers. Tracks include urban circuits, mountain roads, and stadium‑style courses, each with multiple weather conditions and time‑of‑day variations. Gameplay emphasises precision driving, with tight cornering and realistic braking. Unlike Daytona USA, which leaned into exaggerated drifting, Sega Touring Car Championship demanded careful control, making it more challenging for casual players.

The Saturn port added extra content, including new tracks and modes, though it suffered from performance issues due to hardware limitations. While, the PC version offered higher resolution graphics and smoother frame rates. Multiplayer was supported via split‑screen on Saturn and LAN play on PC. This Japanese Sega Saturn version also support online functionality via the Saturn’s modem, and players could participate in online leaderboards and tournaments. This was a niche but innovative feature at the time, making it one of the few Saturn racing titles with online competition.

The game provided a significantly improvement on the Daytona and Sega Rally in graphics but the made it difficult to play. I personally enjoyed this a lot but recognise many found it too twitchy. It really comes from a part of Sega’s golden era of experimental racing titles and their mixed arcade conversions.
