Sega Saturn

セガサターン

An Asian model 2 Sega Saturn sold across Asia. These all identified as NTSC-J for software but came in PAL and NTSC output variants and with different voltage support. This unit was a 240V, outputted in NTSC and ran NTSC-J software, ideal for me in later years.

Description

The White Sega Saturn is the Model 2 hardware revision, characterised by its move away from the original grey and blue colour palette of the 1994 launch model. The “v2” designation refers to several cost-cutting and ergonomic refinements, most notably the transition from oval to round buttons for Power and Reset. This specific white model is synonymous with the Japanese market (where it was designated as the HST-3220), but it was also released across Asian territories in specialised configurations. Unlike the Japanese domestic units, the Asian Version was specifically engineered for markets with different electrical and broadcast standards. This resulted in a “hybrid” machine that maintains the aesthetic of the Japanese white console while incorporating internal hardware modifications.

In March 1996 Sega released a new ‘White Saturn’ for ¥20,000 domestically, less than half of the original hardware price. This coincided with the Hiroshi Fujioka and “Segata Sanshiro” promotion campaign. This revision subsequently filtered across global supplies, in black in the West, and the same white in Eastern markets. This Asian variant comes in many variants due to the divergence in video signals and power requirements across the continent. While they identify as an NTSC-J region model for software, this one outputs a standard 60Hz NTSC signal while others output in PAL. The power supply in this unit also supports 220 V input, a distinct Asian variant designed for markets like Hong Kong and Singapore. Most white Asian units internally utilise the VA7 to VA15 motherboard revisions. These boards are more integrated than the early v1 models and are generally regarded as having more reliable optical drive assemblies, though they lack the access LED found on the original consoles.
