A 3D racing game designed to showcase polygonal graphics and arcade-style speed on home hardware, adapted from Sega’s pioneering Model 1 arcade title.
Description
Virtua Racing SEGASATURN was the third home port of the breakthrough arcade title, after the Mega Drive and 32X versions. It showcases polygonal graphics and arcade-style speed on home hardware. Given the Saturn’s capabilities, the game was graphically the closest adaption from Sega’s pioneering Model 1 arcade title.
The game presents high-speed circuit racing across multiple tracks, featuring Formula-style cars rendered in flat-shaded polygons. Its visual design reflects early 3D aesthetics, prioritising smooth performance and geometric clarity over texture detail. The Saturn version introduces additional modes beyond the original arcade release, well beyond the additions of the 32X ‘Deluxe’ version. The Saturn port includes expanded time trials and multiplayer options, while retaining the core emphasis on precision handling and checkpoint-based progression. There’s substantially more content with extra tracks and vehicles, though performance compromises are evident compared to the arcade original, including reduced frame rates and simplified geometry.
It is notable that development of the Saturn port was handed to a third-party studio rather than Sega’s internal AM teams. While the Saturn hardware was technically capable of running the game with fidelity, changes to the vehicle handling particularly diminished the game’s playability compared to the arcade version. I would have love this version to be perfect but the steering is simply ‘off’, that is nothing like the prior versions. Retrospective despite this being the ‘superior’ port, I always found myself going back to the 32X version. Today, get the Switch-exclusive Virtua Racing (no physical release), as it remasters the original arcade title without compromise and adds features like online play.
