R-Types
A compilation that delivers highly accurate arcade ports of the first two R-Type games, supplemented by an extensive in-game 3D museum database. While contemporary critics praised the precise emulation but penalised the brutal arcade difficulty and limited game count, it is retrospectively revered as a premier, uncompromising presentation of the foundational horizontal shooters.
Description
R-Types is a compilation disc containing exact arcade ports of Irem’s foundational arcade horizontal shoot-’em-ups, R-Type from 1987 and R-Type II from 1989. Rather than upgrading the visuals to 32-bit standards or altering the mechanics, the developers focused on strict emulation accuracy, preserving the pixel-perfect resolution, original sprite flicker, and even the hardware-induced slowdown of the original arcade boards.
The core gameplay loop of both titles revolves around the Force pod, an indestructible auxiliary unit that players can attach to the front or back of their R-9a Arrowhead ship to absorb enemy fire, or detach to act as an independent, free-floating turret . The compilation is rounded out by a comprehensive database known as R’s Museum, which includes detailed timeline documentation, viewable 3D models of the biomechanical Bydo enemies and ships, and newly rendered Full Motion Video cinematic intro sequences.
The compilation was praised by the contemporary gaming press for its uncompromising accuracy to the source material. Critics consistently highlighted the inclusion of the R’s Museum as a high-quality bonus that added necessary depth to the package. However, the release was also met with frustration regarding its brutal, quarter-eating difficulty. Reviewers noted that because the games were exact arcade ports, the memorisation-heavy, one-hit-kill design felt excessively punishing for home console players who were no longer feeding coins into a cabinet. Some critics also questioned the overall value proposition of a full-priced retail disc that only included two relatively short arcade games. In retrospect, R-Types is celebrated as a definitive and incredibly faithful presentation of two foundational titles. Modern players appreciate the strict adherence to the original arcade code, recognising that the famously strict difficulty and precise level routing are integral to the identity of the franchise. An early benchmark for retro compilations, successfully presenting classic, unforgiving arcade mechanics alongside rich supplementary lore.
