A FPS, released exclusively for the PlayStation 3, conceived as a showcase title for Sony’s console, built around a narrative of corporate militarism and bio‑enhanced soldiers.
Description
Haze’s central mechanic revolved around “Nectar,” a performance‑enhancing substance administered to troops of the Mantel Corporation. Under its influence, soldiers gained heightened abilities e.g. improved accuracy, strength, and resilience; but also suffered distorted perception, ignoring civilian casualties and seeing the battlefield through a propagandised lens.
The campaign followed Sergeant Shane Carpenter, who begins as a Mantel soldier but defects to join the rebel faction known as the Promise Hand. This shift allowed players to experience both sides of the conflict: the glossy, drug‑fuelled perspective of Mantel and the raw, vulnerable reality of the rebels. Multiplayer modes included competitive matches and four‑player co‑op, though the game was criticised for technical issues, repetitive design, and failing to live up to its ambitious premise.
Haze was marketed heavily as a potential “Halo‑killer” for the PS3, but its reception was lukewarm, with its uneven execution despite intriguing ideas. Retrospectively it is more as a cautionary tale of over‑hyping than as a defining shooter, though its themes of corporate control and altered perception remain distinctive within the genre.
