Persona 5

ペルソナ5

A stylish RPG and social simulation set in modern Tokyo, where students live double lives, reforming corrupt adults. Its themes of rebellion and identity, combined with bold art direction and acclaimed music, have made it a landmark in Japanese RPG history.

Description

Persona 5 follows a group of high school students in Tokyo who live double lives as the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, exploring a supernatural realm called the Metaverse in order to reform corrupt adults. The story begins with the protagonist, later codenamed Joker, being falsely accused of assault and placed on probation. After transferring to Shujin Academy, he discovers the Metaverse, a parallel world shaped by human desires. Alongside other students who have also been wronged by society, he forms the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, a group that infiltrates Palaces, which are manifestations of distorted desires, to steal the malevolent intent from corrupt adults. Their mission is to expose hypocrisy and oppression in modern society while balancing the everyday demands of school life, friendships, and personal growth.

Gameplay alternates between turn‑based dungeon crawling and social simulation. In the Metaverse, you battle Shadows using Personas, manifestations of inner psyche, with combat revolving around exploiting weaknesses and fusing new Personas. Outside of combat, Joker manages his daily schedule, choosing how to spend time with classmates, confidants, and part‑time jobs. These social links deepen relationships and unlock new abilities, creating a balance between narrative, strategy, and time management.

Persona 5 is steeped in picaresque fiction, drawing on the imagery of outlaws and rebels. Each Phantom Thief’s Persona is inspired by a historical or literary figure who defied authority, such as Arsène Lupin or Carmen. The game explores freedom, rebellion, and identity, presenting modern Tokyo as a kind of prison where young people are constrained by corrupt systems. By removing their masks, characters awaken to their true selves, a metaphor for confronting vulnerability and reclaiming agency.

Visually, the game is renowned for its striking art direction, led by Shigenori Soejima. The bold red and black palette, comic‑book‑style menus, and fluid transitions between exploration and battle create a distinctive aesthetic that has been widely praised. Shoji Meguro’s soundtrack, blending acid jazz, rock, and funk, reinforces the stylish and rebellious tone.

The game has been lauded as one of the greatest RPGs of all time, for its storytelling, characters, art style, and music. An expanded edition, Persona 5 Royal, was released a few years after with a new character, additional confidants, new mechanics, and an extended third semester storyline. By 2022, combined sales of both editions surpassed 7.2 million copies worldwide, making it the most successful entry in the series. The game also received a spin-off canonical sequel in Persona 5 Strikers.
