Remote Control Headphone

リモコン付ヘッドフォン

An accessory peripheral designed to combine audio playback with an inline remote control.

Description

The Remote Control Headphone for PlayStation Portable was an official Sony add‑on, providing both stereo earphones and a small remote unit attached to the cable. The remote featured buttons for play, pause, track skip, and volume adjustment, allowing users to control music and video playback without handling the PSP directly. The design integrated a clip so the remote could be fastened to clothing, and the earphones were tuned for portable use with the PSP’s media functions. The headphones were detachable so could be replaced with over-ear or higher end units.

The accessory connected through the PSP’s headphone jack and remote control port, a dual interface that allowed audio output alongside command signals. This setup reflected Sony’s broader approach to portable media devices, echoing similar remote headphones used with MiniDisc players and Walkman units. This reflects the positioning of the PlayStation Portable.

The Remote Control Headphone was marketed as part of the PSP’s positioning as a multimedia device, emphasising its role not only as a gaming console but also as a portable music and video player. Retrospectively, it is remembered as one of the more practical official accessories, highlighting the PSP’s ambition to compete with dedicated media players of its era.
