Pro Action Replay

A cheat cartridge developed by Datel, designed to plug into the PlayStation’s parallel I/O port on the back of early models of the PlayStation console. This might be the EMS model, need to re-check.

Description

The Pro Action Replay functioned as a code device, letting players input hexadecimal cheat codes that modified memory values in real time, for example infinite health, unlocked levels, or altered physics. Datel also offered a PC Link cable and software package that expanded its functionality.

Unlike GameShark (which was essentially the same technology under a different brand), the Pro Action Replay also offered region‑bypass features. By intercepting the PlayStation’s boot process, it could disable territorial lockouts, allowing PAL consoles to run NTSC imports and vice versa. In theory this could support the “swap tricks” for booting backup discs although not officially endorsed.

Technically, the unit worked by sitting between the PlayStation’s CPU and memory bus via the parallel port, monitoring and rewriting values as the game executed. Codes were stored in the cartridge’s onboard memory, and users could enter new ones through a simple menu interface. Later PlayStation revisions removed the parallel I/O port, which meant the Pro Action Replay was only usable on early models unless modified hardware was employed.

An optional PC Link connected the Action Replay to a computer via a serial interface, allowing users to manage cheat codes and the device’s operations directly from a DOS terminal rather than manually on the PlayStation. This made it easier to import large databases of codes, share them online, and back them up. Advanced users could even experiment with memory values in real time, effectively turning the Action Replay into a debugging tool.
