Resistance: Burning Skies

A handheld spin‑off of Sony’s alt‑history sci‑fi shooter series that showed the Vita’s potential.

Description

Resistance: Burning Skies is set between Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2. The game shifts the perspective from soldiers to an ordinary man, New York City firefighter Tom Riley, who’s caught in the middle of the Chimera’s East Coast invasion in August 1951. What begins as a routine call to a burning building quickly turns into a desperate fight for survival, as Riley battles through Staten Island and beyond, trying to reunite with his wife and daughter while aiding a militia group called the Minutemen.

The game was notable for being the first dual‑stick FPS on a handheld, using the Vita’s physical controls alongside touchscreen gestures for secondary weapon functions, grenade throws, and melee attacks. It retained the series’ trademark weapon wheel and exotic arsenal with upgradeable abilities unlocked via collectible “Gray Tech.” A short single‑player campaign was paired with an eight‑player online mode featuring Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Survival across six maps.

While it aimed to deliver a “console‑quality” Resistance experience on the go, Burning Skies received mixed reviews. Although praised for proving the Vita could handle a full FPS it was criticised for its brief length, uneven pacing, and underdeveloped story.
