LEGO Jurassic World

A massive, four-film celebration of the franchise. While technically the weaker version in terms of resolution and loading, the Wii U edition was critically redeemed by its superior cooperative features and tactile GamePad integration.

Description

LEGO Jurassic World is a comprehensive action-adventure title released to coincide with the theatrical debut of the fourth film. It bundles the narrative arcs of four major motion pictures: Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park III, and Jurassic World. It launched across nearly every available platform of the era, across two generations of systems. The Wii U version is a curious case of hardware-specific utility versus raw power. While the core content is identical to its counterparts, the public and critical reception was defined by the Wii U GamePad. Critics frequently praised this version as the “definitive” family experience because it solved the long-standing “LEGO split-screen” headache; by allowing one player to use the GamePad screen while the other used the TV, the game eliminated the jarring vertical or horizontal screen-split that often hampered cooperative play.

The gameplay follows the established TT Games formula—blending light platforming, environmental puzzle-solving, and “stud” collection—but adapts it to the high-stakes tension of the film series. The experience is defined by its playful sanitisation of the source material; famous death scenes are reimagined as slapstick comedy, where characters are depicted as being mildly inconvenienced or surviving through absurd means rather than meeting their cinematic ends. Players navigate 20 levels (five per film) and can explore two massive hub worlds: Isla Nublar and Isla Sorna, which allow for free-roaming exploration between missions. By collecting “Amber Bricks” hidden throughout the levels, players can unlock and take control of 20 different species of dinosaurs. You can also access the ‘Dino Customizer’ at the Visitor Center and Innovation Center, which allows players to create custom hybrids by mixing unlocked dinosaur parts.

The dual-screen advantage of the Wii U was contrasted by its noticeably longer load times compared to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and the visual presentation suffered from lower-resolution textures and simplified lighting. Critically, the game was called out for occasional frame-rate stutters in the dense, open-world hub of Isla Nublar, which made the hardware feel its age. Yet considering the title also launched on the prior PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, this title was not inherently about the most performant system. The ‘DNA Customizer” and interactive map on the GamePad were lauded for making the game’s deep collection of 20+ dinosaurs feel more accessible and hands-on than on any other platform.
