A metal inspired, gothic hack‑and‑slash adventure platformer that mixes brutal combat with puzzle elements, drenched in pixel‑art gore and accompanied by a soundtrack from Curt Victor Bryant (formerly of Celtic Frost).
Description
Slain: Back from Hell follows Bathoryn, a doomed warrior who must liberate six cursed realms from demonic overlords. Each stage is a gauntlet of traps, monsters, and bosses, demanding precise timing and mastery of three elemental weapons. Combat is deliberately punishing with enemies that can shred you quickly if you mistime attacks, and the game revels in gruesome death animations, from dismemberment to crushing hazards.
The aesthetic is central to its identity. Gothic castles, blood‑soaked landscapes, and heavy‑metal motifs dominate the visuals, while the soundtrack drives the atmosphere with relentless riffs. It was often compared its tone to Castlevania, though it leaned harder into metal culture and gore.
Originally released as Slain! in early-2016, the game was poorly received due to clunky controls and balance issues. The developers quickly overhauled it, relaunching as Slain: Back from Hell. This updated version improved responsiveness, refined difficulty, and added polish, earning far stronger reviews. With the gameplay now acceptable, it no longer holds back the game’s style. The game has its fans who enjoy a punishing retro‑styled action games with a strong aesthetic identity.
