Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters II: Yamikai Kettōki

Description

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters II: Yamikai Kettōki is still much simpler than the modern Yu-Gi-Oh! card game, but it adds a lot over the original Game Boy title. The card list expands from 365 cards to 720, while Trap Cards and Ritual Cards appear for the first time in the video game series. It also introduces systems such as Duelist Level, Deck Capacity, and individual card levels, meaning stronger cards cannot simply be loaded into the deck from the beginning.

The campaign is structured around repeated duels against characters from the early Yu-Gi-Oh! cast. Players face opponents such as Yugi, Jonouchi, Kaiba, Mai, Pegasus, Yami Yugi, Yami Bakura, Shadi, and Ishizu, with progression requiring multiple wins against duelists before later stages open up. The game’s rules include many era-specific quirks, including simplified monster effects, altered Magic and Trap behaviour, fusion-heavy play, and the original summon alignment / attribute advantage system, where monster matchups can override raw attack values.

Card acquisition is a major part of the loop. Players earn cards from duel victories, bonuses, passwords, trading, and communication features, including Communication Fusion, where exchanging certain cards can transform the received card into something else. The game also links strongly to the physical card boom: retail copies included three random promotional cards from a set of ten. As a historical Yu-Gi-Oh! game, it sits in the awkward but interesting space before the video games fully followed the official card game rules, reflecting the early manga/anime card-battle atmosphere more than tournament-accurate Yu-Gi-Oh! today.
