Tempest 2000
A tube shooter that rebuilds Atari’s vector arcade classic as a faster, louder, and more elaborate assault on the senses. The Saturn port of a defining game of the Atari Jaguar preserves the 100-stage campaign, electronic soundtrack, power-up system, and hypnotic visual intensity while adding a smoother presentation.
Description
Tempest 2000 places the player at the outer edge of geometric webs invaded by hostile electronic creatures. An intergalactic conflict expressed through accelerating enemy waves, pulsing colour, and commands that flash across the playfield as encouragement or warning. The player moves a claw-shaped Blaster around the rim of each web and fires inward at enemies climbing towards the edge. Power-ups provide various upgrades, while collecting three Warp Tokens opens bonus sequences between stages. The main campaign contains 100 webs, with automatic progress keys and the unlockable Beastly difficulty mode extending repeat play. Traditional Tempest recreates the arcade format, Tempest Plus adds enhanced visuals and cooperative or AI-assisted play, and Tempest Duel supports direct competition.
Its lineage stems with Dave Theurer’s Tempest, the 1981 arcade game whose colour vector display and rotary controls established the tube-shooter format. Jeff Minter’s Atari Jaguar original transformed that design with power-ups, new enemies, bonus rounds, electronic music, and dense visual effects, becoming the system’s most celebrated release. The Saturn version closely follows the Jaguar game and retains the Tempest 2000 name, unlike the more extensively altered PlayStation adaptation Tempest X3. It runs more smoothly in places, but experienced players often prefer the Jaguar original for its sharper control response, more active particle effects, and balance tuned by Minter around the source hardware.
The original Jaguar release received widespread acclaim for its speed, soundtrack, visual design, and intelligent expansion of the arcade rules. Reception of the Saturn conversion remained positive, although it arrived after the game’s defining impact had already passed along with subtle changes affected its precision. Retrospectively it is one of the strongest alternatives to the Jaguar edition and as an excellent example of arcade simplicity expanded without losing its immediate appeal.
