A first of many Gundam titles on the Saturn that faithfully provides a cinematic storytelling and sprite-based combat to recreate the original 1979 anime experience through 2D side-scrolling.
Description
Kidō Senshi Gundam (Mobile Suit Gundam) is a 2D side-scrolling action game rather than the 3D simulation of later Gundam Saturn titles. It relies on the console’s strong 2D sprite-handling capabilities to deliver a cinematic retelling of key events in the original 1979 television series. The gameplay contains a traditional linear structure where you pilot the RX-78-2 Gundam through various stages, moving left to right to engage Zeon forces. The combat involves a mix of long-range beam rifle fire and close-quarters beam sabre strikes. A unique functional shift occurs during boss encounters, where the perspective often changes to a head-to-head, fighting-game-style duel. The atmosphere is authentically grounded in the source material, utilising original voice acting and music from the show to maintain narrative consistency throughout the “One Year War” campaign.
On a technical level, the game features a heavy integration of FMV cutscenes taken directly from the anime to bridge the gap between combat missions. The in-game graphics consist of detailed 2D sprites and multi-layered backgrounds that reflect the hand-drawn aesthetic of the 1970s production. This presentation prioritises the storytelling over complex mechanical depth, ensuring that the experience feels like an interactive version of the actual broadcast.
At the time of its release, reviews highlighted the game’s high production values and its faithful adherence to the anime, though they also noted that it was quite short and lacked a significant challenge, often being beatable in a single sitting. Critics at the time praised the inclusion of the original cast and the transition between animation and gameplay as a highlight for fans. Retrospectively it sits as a high quality 2D Gundam title before the series shifted toward 3D polygonal designs. Given the Saturn’s high quality 2D performance, it has aged well.
