Bridge-It
A simple reflex game in which the player operates four temporary bridges, timing each closure to help a procession of pedestrians cross a water-filled town safely.
Description
Bridge-It was among the system’s early releases and was included in the Amsoft 12-Pack supplied with some CPC 464 computers. This version is the original big box version containing the cassette case in a die-cut box window. The game setting consists of two houses connected by a walkway interrupted by four bridges positioned in different directions. Small pedestrians walk automatically along the route, and the player must hold the corresponding joystick direction or key to close each bridge as they approach. Bridges remain closed only while activated and reopen almost immediately, causing mistimed pedestrians to fall into the water.
The game contains nine difficulty levels that use the same layout but progressively reduce the interval between walkers, eventually requiring several bridges to be managed in rapid succession. The number of permitted losses can be set between one and 50, while the looping music can be switched off. The colourful town and instantly understandable objective made it a very approachable but simple title with a single repeated task. This was a love it or hate it title, either you found its escalating pace addictive or saw it as frustrating and excessively shallow. It worked well as a brief reaction test and demonstration for new CPC owners, but offers little lasting appeal.
