Beach-Head
A multi-stage combat game combining naval navigation, anti-aircraft defence, ship-to-ship gunnery, tank driving, and a final assault against an enormous coastal fortress.
الوصف
Beach-Head is set in a fictional conflict resembling the Pacific theatre of the Second World War, it tasks the player with invading an island controlled by a dictator and destroying the heavily defended fortress at its centre. The invasion is divided into distinct arcade sequences. The player first navigates a fleet through hostile waters, either risking a narrow passage or taking a longer route, before shooting down attacking aircraft and engaging enemy ships with naval guns. Surviving forces then land tanks on the island, avoid obstacles while crossing the beach, and attack the fortress’s massive rotating cannon. The gun moves faster than the tanks can aim, so several vehicles may need to reach the final stage before it can be destroyed. Losses suffered in earlier sections reduce the number available during the assault.
The variety of play styles gave Beach-Head an unusual scope for an early computer action game, although most sections are mechanically simple and offer limited strategic control. The CPC version has clear graphics and some effective combat sequences, but sparse colours, minimal sound, stiff controls, and repetition made it feel dated. It was historically popular and influential for linking several different arcade scenarios into one campaign, but modern reception is more reserved: the naval and shooting sections remain enjoyable in short bursts, while the limited depth and audiovisual presentation reduce its lasting appeal.
