World-Wise

An educational geography program covering the United Kingdom and the wider world, combining a reference database with quizzes about locations, physical features, land use, and political regions.

Beschreibung

World-Wise was aimed at somewhat older children than the publisher’s introductory educational titles and divided its material into separate United Kingdom and world sections. The program covers categories including towns, rivers, mountains, lakes, canals, counties, islands, coastal waters, land use, and historical sites. Users can study existing records, enter additional geographical information, and then answer questions generated from the accumulated database. This editable structure allows teachers or pupils to expand the supplied material and create exercises based on subjects currently being studied.

The presentation is largely text-based, with simple menus and multiple-choice questions rather than maps, animation, or arcade-style activities. Its database approach offered useful flexibility in classrooms, but accuracy partly depended on the quality of information entered by users. The limited graphics and repetitive questioning make it less engaging than later educational software, and its 1984 geographical data would become outdated with all the changes in the subsequent decade. Nevertheless, World-Wise is a practical early example of computer-assisted learning that the CPC embraced as it pushed into the classroom. A French version, Le Géographe, was also produced switching the UK-centric content for the Francosphere.
