Microsoft SideWinder 3D Pro

A flight‑simulation joystick built around precision input and compatibility with PC games of the mid‑1990s. Bundled with MechWarrior 2 and NetMech game. Joystick model number 63545.

Description

The Microsoft SideWinder 3D Pro was part of the early SideWinder line of PC gaming peripherals. The 3D Pro introduced Microsoft’s optical sensing system, which replaced potentiometers with infrared sensors to track stick movement more accurately and with greater durability. It also added a digital compatibility mode, allowing the joystick to emulate older digital inputs so it could run with DOS flight simulators and other legacy software. The Pro model featured more programmable buttons, a refined hat switch, and a twist‑rudder axis, making it more versatile for complex flight controls compared to the original non-‘Pro’ model.

The 3D Pro’s unique optical sensing system to track stick movement provided smoother and more durable input compared with potentiometer‑based designs. It connected via the standard game port interface, and later revisions improved compatibility with Windows 95 and DirectInput. The stick also included a twist function for rudder control, giving players three axes of movement without requiring separate pedals.

At release, the SideWinder 3D Pro was praised for its build quality, precision, and versatility, though some users noted compatibility issues with certain DOS games. Retrospectively, it is one of the defining PC joysticks of its era, bridging the transition from digital to analogue input and setting the stage for later SideWinder models such as the Precision Pro and Force Feedback Pro. It remains associated with the golden age of flight simulators and the rise of dedicated PC gaming hardware.
