The Sims 4
A life simulation game where you create, control, and shape the lives of virtual characters called Sims. It emphasises customisation, storytelling, and creativity, allowing players to design Sims, build homes, and guide them through careers, relationships, and everyday experiences. The physical copy of this game is only for Windows, otherwise requires online install through Origin on both Windows and Mac.
Description
The Sims 4 improves upon its predecessor by introducing a more intuitive Create‑A‑Sim, where players directly sculpt facial features and body shapes rather than relying on sliders. Build Mode is restructured with flexible placement, room dragging, and adjustable wall heights, making construction faster and more accessible compared to the layered menus of The Sims 3. The Gallery system represents a major progression, allowing instant sharing and downloading of Sims and houses without external tools, situating creativity within a connected community. Performance is also enhanced, with smoother loading and reduced hardware demands relative to the open world of The Sims 3, though this comes at the cost of returning to neighbourhood‑based play.
Upon its release many noted the improvements in usability and creative freedom, while highlighting the absence of certain features present in the prior entry. Inevitably when a new Sims would release, the prior versions would already have a large catalogue of content that couldn’t be immediately matched. It was also debated whether the reduction of open world exploration limited the game’s ambition. The game world is divided into neighbourhoods, each with distinctive venues and social opportunities. Sims can visit parks, cafes, or clubs, expanding their social circles and participating in events. Everyday life unfolds dynamically as your Sims can pursue careers, develop skills, fall in love, raise families, or simply throw parties. Expansion Packs, Game Packs, and Kits add new layers, from pets and seasons to supernatural elements and cultural design themes, continually evolving the experience.
The Sims 4 was a turning point in the franchise, that finally modernised its tools and community integration. It redefined the balance between player creativity and technical performance, situating the series within a live‑service model sustained by expansions and updates. Since 2022, The Sims 4 has switched to a free to play model. EA and Maxis continue to support it with regular updates and expansions, such as High School Years, Eco Lifestyle, and For Rent. The game is available across PC, Mac, PlayStation, and Xbox, with cross‑community sharing through the Gallery.
