Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth – Rising Tide extends the premise of humanity colonising alien worlds by pushing settlement into the oceans. Aquatic cities are the headline feature: they float on water, expand borders by moving rather than by culture, and specialise in naval production, energy, and culture. They are harder to defend and weaker at producing land or air units, but they open up vast new territory and strategic depth.

The diplomacy system is rebuilt from scratch. Instead of static leader personalities, factions now develop traits that can be purchased and upgraded with diplomatic capital, a new resource. This allows leaders to shift their stance over time, creating a more fluid and responsive diplomatic landscape. Hybrid affinities expand the original trio of Purity, Supremacy, and Harmony. Players can now blend affinities, unlocking unique hybrid units and technologies. This encourages experimentation rather than a single‑track progression.

Exploration is also expanded. The artifact system lets you collect alien relics and combine them into powerful bonuses or wonders. New biomes such as the Primordial world type add variety to planetary conditions, altering both strategy and aesthetics. The expansion introduces new sponsors: including the North Sea Alliance and INTEGR, each with distinctive traits that further diversify playstyles. Alien life also evolves, with new sea‑based threats like the Makara challenging oceanic expansion.

The result is a game that feels more dynamic and less rigid than the base Beyond Earth. Aquatic cities and hybrid affinities encourage creative strategies, while the diplomacy overhaul makes interactions with AI leaders more engaging and less predictable.
