Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst

Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst is an enhanced port of the prior PSO Episode 1&2 from Dreamcast, GameCube, and Xbox, but it adds Episode IV, which expands the story with new areas such as the Crater and Subterranean Desert, new enemies like Boota, Satellite Lizard, and Dorphon, and new rare creatures such as Del Rappy and Pazuzu.

Compared with the Dreamcast original, which only contained Episode I, Blue Burst offers far more content and better balance. The GameCube and Xbox releases added Episode II, new classes, and offline multiplayer, but they lacked Episode IV. Blue Burst therefore became the most complete version of the original PSO, though it sacrificed offline accessibility. The only thing missing is Episode III, which was a GameCube exclusive side title.

Unlike the earlier console versions, Blue Burst does not allow offline play; instead, it provides a “One Person Mode” online that replicates solo questing. This design was meant to reduce cheating and unify progression across the community. The difference lies in the design and infrastructure: Blue Burst required players to connect to Sega’s servers, with all progress stored server-side. This eliminated the risk of save corruption and item duplication that plagued earlier versions (see version 1.1 on GameCube). It also allowed Sega to introduce new quests and seasonal events directly into the game more easily, although such events were common particularly on the GameCube with seasonal GBA games.

For fans who had embraced Phantasy Star Online as the first popular online console RPG, this was the ultimate version. The game was generally available as a download although this is the physical release on disc.
