Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II

ファンタシースターオンライン エピソード1&2

An online action role‑playing game that situates cooperative science fiction combat within a persistent networked community. Came in Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 & 2 Modem Set bundle and was later made obsolete by the patched version 1.1 disk.

Description

Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II expands on the structure of Phantasy Star Online where players create Hunters and explore the planet Ragol through instanced areas filled with enemies, bosses, and loot. The game’s introduction frames a mysterious explosion of the colony ship Pioneer 1. The story follows the player as part of Pioneer 2’s expeditionary force, tasked with uncovering what happened to the settlers and confronting the hostile creatures that emerge across Ragol’s surface and subterranean ruins.

The essence of the game is cooperative exploration and combat, where players join together online to battle enemies, collect loot, and progress through quests that piece together the fate of Pioneer 1 and the origins of the planet’s corruption. It situates science fiction adventure within a framework of community play, blending narrative mystery with action RPG mechanics. Combat unfolds in real time with melee weapons, firearms, and techniques, while character progression is shaped by experience levels, equipment, and the evolution of MAG companions.

Episode I retains the original Dreamcast content, while Episode II adds new stages, enemies, bosses, and items, expanding the cooperative framework with greater variety and challenge. Episode I follows the investigation through forests, caves, mines, and ancient ruins, gradually revealing that the disaster is tied to a parasitic entity known as Dark Falz. Episode II expands the storyline with new areas such as the VR Temple, VR Spaceship, Central Control Area, and Seabed, introducing fresh enemies and bosses while continuing the theme of uncovering Ragol’s deeper mysteries.

Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II moved the title from the Dreamcast to other platforms. Initially launching on the GameCube, it coincided with the launch of the GameCube’s modem and later broadband (LAN) adaptor. The subsequent year it would also launch alongside the Xbox Live Starter Kit in Japan. In retrospect, PSO played a significant role, from being the leading Dreamcast online experience to being the near-exclusive online title for the GameCube and initial online offering for Xbox. On Xbox the starter kit included a USB keyboard adapter, while the GameCube saw a custom controller with integrated mini JIS keyboard. Eventually the title was released internationally. By the time the PAL version reached Australia it is notable the UK release was distributed with no online support at all. For myself, I had been playing the Japanese version since launch day, but it was a curious site to see in local stores.

Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II is rightfully recognised as a landmark in console online gaming, remembered for pioneering cooperative action RPG play on home systems. It carried on Sega’s networked ambitions after the Dreamcast and in establishing a template for later online RPGs that blended action combat with community‑driven progression.
