Destiny 2
A shared-world sci-fi shooter that blends fast-paced gunplay with MMO-style progression, telling an evolving space opera about humanity’s Guardians battling the forces of Darkness while navigating Bungie’s constant reinventions of story, systems, and seasonal content.
Description
Destiny 2 positioned itself as both a continuation and a course correction from the original Destiny. The first game had built a devoted fanbase but was criticised for its fragmented story and grind-heavy progression. Bungie responded by making Destiny 2’s opening campaign more cinematic and accessible, with a clear villain in Dominus Ghaul of the Red Legion. The story began with the destruction of the Guardians’ home, the Last City, and the loss of their Light, giving players a more personal motivation to fight back. This was a deliberate contrast to the vague, lore-heavy storytelling of the first game, and it aligned Destiny 2 more closely with narrative-driven shooters of the time, such as Halo 5: Guardians and Titanfall 2, which emphasised cinematic presentation.
Gameplay at launch also reflected lessons learned from Destiny. Bungie restructured the weapon system into Kinetic, Energy, and Power slots, simplifying the Primary/Special/Heavy categories from the first game. This change was meant to balance PvP in the Crucible but drew mixed reactions from veteran players who missed the flexibility of Destiny’s loadouts. Strikes, raids, and patrol zones returned, but with more guided progression and a steadier loot economy. Compared to contemporaries like Warframe, which emphasised free-to-play grind and customisation, and Ubisoft’s The Division, with its cover-based tactical shooting, Destiny 2 leaned heavily on Bungie’s trademark gunplay and raid design as its unique selling point.
The initial release was published under Activision, with Bungie promising a steady cadence of expansions. Year One content included Curse of Osiris and Warmind, which were criticized for being thin compared to Destiny’s The Taken King (2015). This mirrored a broader trend in live-service games at the time: strong launches followed by uneven post-release support, as seen with The Division‘s early struggles and Warframe’s slow but steady growth.
At launch it was well received for the campaign’s clarity, the visuals and the refined gunplay. However, the typical long-term player complained endgame lacked depth compared to the original Destiny’s later expansions. This tension between accessibility for newcomers and depth for veterans defined Destiny 2’s early years and set the stage for Bungie’s later reinventions once they split from Activision in 2019.
