Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil

A survival horror first person shooter set within a research facility on the surface of Mars. Showcased the lighting and shadow capabilities of the hardware through a high fidelity graphics engine.

Description

Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil follows an unnamed marine combat engineer two years after the events of the Doom 3 incident as he investigates a mysterious signal at a Martian archaeological site. Upon discovering a powerful relic known as the Artifact, the marine inadvertently triggers a second demonic invasion led by the dragon like Maledict. Players must fight through several research labs and deep caverns to return to hell and destroy the source of the signal. The story introduces new characters such as Dr Elizabeth McNeil who serves as the primary contact for the marine during the mission.

Gameplay introduces the Grabber, a tool that uses physics to catch and hurl enemy projectiles or move objects in the environment. Players also manage the Artifact, which grants three distinct powers as the game progresses including the ability to slow down time and gain invulnerability. This version of the game includes an exclusive feature where the flashlight is mounted to the pistol, removing the need to switch between light and weapons in certain combat scenarios. It is often compared to Half Life 2 due to the projectile catching mechanics of the Grabber and functions as a standalone release on the platform.

At the time of release, reviewers praised the game for its faster pace and the variety of its level design compared to the original title. Critics noted that while the campaign was shorter, the inclusion of the double barrelled shotgun and the physics tool improved the overall combat loop. It is remembered today for the value provided by the included versions of The Ultimate Doom and Doom II on the disc. The release is regarded as a successful expansion that refined the horror atmosphere of the series into a more traditional action experience. The title remains noted for being a complete package that did not require the original game to function on the hardware.
