Medal of Honor: Rising Sun (Platinum)

A cinematic and ambitious Pacific War shooter remembered for its spectacular Pearl Harbor opening and its pioneering inclusion of a full co-operative campaign mode.

Description

Medal of Honor: Rising Sun brought the long-running World War II series to the Pacific Theatre, focusing on the harrowing events of the conflict from the perspective of Corporal Joseph Griffin. This title captures a more personal and cinematic tone than its predecessors, moving away from the European battlefields of the fifth generation in favour of dense jungle environments and naval warfare. It reflects a design direction that prioritised blockbuster set-pieces and historical atmosphere, aiming to deliver a ‘Hollywood’ take on the war during the peak of the PlayStation 2’s popularity.

The gameplay experience centres on the attack on Pearl Harbor and subsequent campaigns through Guadalcanal and Singapore. This entry introduced the ability to carry out missions with an AI-controlled squad, a mechanic designed to increase the scale of the engagements. A notable feature is the Two-Player Co-operative Campaign, which allowed players to tackle the entire story together, a rare inclusion for first-person shooters of the era. The game also featured a robust multiplayer suite, supporting up to four players in split-screen or eight players online, with a variety of maps ranging from aircraft carriers to tropical villages.

On a technical level, the development was defined by the use of an evolved version of the Medal of Honor: Frontline engine, which was pushed to render more complex foliage and water effects. The orchestral score by Christopher Lennertz notably utilised a full live orchestra to enhance the game’s cinematic gravitas. However, the PlayStation 2 version faced several technical issues, including a stuttering frame rate during the chaotic Pearl Harbor sequence and a significantly lower draw distance compared to its Xbox counterpart. There were development hurdles involved the AI pathfinding; because the jungle maps were much denser and less linear than the corridors of the previous games, enemy and squad-mate AI would frequently become stuck behind terrain or fail to react to player actions, a common limitation of the generation.

Upon release Medal of Honor: Rising Sun received a mixed but commercially successful reception, often praised for its high production values but criticised for its short length. Magazine reviewers lauded the breath-taking opening level and the addition of co-operative play, though many noted that the gun play felt dated compared to emerging hits like Halo or Call of Duty. Reception was particularly strong in North America and Europe, where the franchise remained a top-tier brand, despite a perceived lack of mechanical innovation. Retrospectively, it was a transitional title; while it successfully captured the scale of the Pacific War, it is often seen as the point where the series began to lose its dominance to more modern shooters.
