Analogue-era, consumer widescreen video was transmitted anamorphically, that is horizontally compressed as a regular 4:3 image with the display device stretching the image. This was remained common with digital broadcasting and DVD-Video discs. Prior to the seventh generation of video game consoles, widescreen titles were rare and software specific. Only a few developers, with an interest for technical excellence undertook the extra effort. This term covers games up unto the sixth generation that supported a widescreen mode through anamorphic output, prior to widescreen becoming natively supported.
