Ghost Rider

A surprisingly competent late-era movie tie-in that features a narrative penned by legendary comic book writers with impressive graphics that push the PS2 hardware.

Description

Ghost Rider is a fast-paced hack-and-slash action title to coincide with the Nicolas Cage theatrical film. Rather than strictly adapting the movie’s plot, the game acts as a loose sequel. This decision distanced itself slightly from the critical panning of the film, letting it stands on its own with acclaimed comic writers Garth Ennis and Jimmy Palmiotti to pen the script. This grounded the game’s narrative much closer to the source material’s darker, more demonic roots, pitting Johnny Blaze against classic villains like Scarecrow, Deathwatch, and Lilith.

The gameplay experience is built around two distinct pillars: on-foot brawling and high-speed vehicular combat. The core progression on foot is a shameless but highly effective replication of the God of War formula. Ghost Rider wields the Hellfire Chain, which functions almost exactly like Kratos’ Blades of Chaos, allowing players to unleash sweeping, wide-area combo attacks and juggle demons in the air. Defeating enemies yields souls that can be spent to unlock new moves and upgrade health. To break up the pacing, the game frequently shifts to the Hellcycle, putting players into arcade-style, on-rails driving segments where they must jump over ravines, slide under obstacles, and shoot enemy bikers with hellfire blasts.

On a technical level, the game pushes the aging PlayStation 2 hardware to deliver impressive particle effects. The implementation of the dynamic fire and lighting systems are impressive. Johnny Blaze’s flaming skull and the sweeping, bright orange trails of the Hellfire Chain looked spectacular running on standard-definition hardware, maintaining a remarkably stable framerate despite the chaotic on-screen action. Furthermore, the game included a wealth of unlockable bonus content that rewarded multiple playthroughs, including the ability to replay the entire campaign as the vampire hunter Blade (complete with his own unique moveset and day-walking storyline) or Ghost Rider 2099.

Upon release, Ghost Rider received mixed but generally favorable reception for a movie tie-in. Magazine reviewers lauded the incredibly fluid combat and the deep respect shown for the comic book lore, though they heavily criticised the game’s short length and the frustrating, overly punishing nature of the Hellcycle driving segments. Retrospectively, it is a highly functional, enjoyable clone of better action games that provides a surprisingly fun, brainless action romp even today.
