Just Dance 2016 continues the franchise’s signature gameplay: players select a song and mirror the movements of brightly costumed on‑screen dancers. Motion tracking is handled via Kinect, PlayStation Camera, Move, or Wii Remotes depending on platform, but for the first time, players can also use a smartphone app to track movements, making the game more accessible to households without dedicated peripherals. The game introduces several new modes. Dance Party allows both competitive and cooperative play, with shared score bars for team performance. Dance Quests pit players against AI opponents across three songs. Sweat & Playlists lets players group routines into workout sessions. World Video Challenge enables players to record performances and challenge others to beat their score. Showtime mode, available on newer consoles, allows players to lip‑sync and act out songs in front of a camera to create shareable music videos.

Just Dance 2016 features over forty songs, including “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars, “All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor, and “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga. Each track includes unique choreography, with some offering alternate routines. The game also revamps the Community Remix feature, integrating player videos into the background of official routines. A major addition is Just Dance Unlimited, a subscription service exclusive to Xbox One, Wii U, and PlayStation 4. It offers streaming access to a growing catalogue of songs from previous Just Dance titles and exclusive new content. At launch, it included 150 songs and four exclusive Dance Quests, marking a shift toward live content delivery and ongoing updates.

Reception was generally positive, with praise for the expanded accessibility and variety of modes. While the core gameplay remained unchanged, the addition of mobile tracking and streaming content helped modernise the experience for a broader audience.
