A 2008 post‑apocalyptic RPG that shifts the Fallout series into a first‑person, open‑world format set in the ruins of Washington, D.C.
Description
Fallout 3 marked a dramatic reinvention of the Fallout franchise. Moving away from the isometric, turn‑based design of its predecessors, Bethesda re‑imagined the series as a fully 3D, first‑person RPG while retaining the branching dialogue, moral choices, and retro‑futurist aesthetic that defined the brand. Players assume the role of the “Lone Wanderer,” a youth from Vault 101 who ventures into the Capital Wasteland in search of their father. The narrative centres on Project Purity, a plan to restore clean water to the devastated region, and pits the player against factions such as the Brotherhood of Steel and the Enclave.
The game’s world design emphasises freedom and consequence. Players can explore the Capital Wasteland at will, encountering settlements like Megaton, Rivet City, and Tenpenny Tower, each with its own moral dilemmas and branching outcomes. The V.A.T.S. combat system allowed for a hybrid of real‑time shooting and turn‑based targeting, bridging the series’ heritage with its new format. Side quests, random encounters, and environmental storytelling reinforced the sense of a living, reactive wasteland. Reception was broadly positive for the scale of the world, the depth of choice, and the atmospheric setting. As later titles would increasingly face, criticism focused on technical instability – looking at you Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4. Despite the tonal shift from the earlier Black Isle entries, Fallout 3 is widely credited with revitalising the series and introducing it to a new generation of players.
This Game of the Year Edition includes the Fallout 3 base game with 5 DLC expansions:
- Operation: Anchorage
- The Pitt
- Broken Steel
- Point Lookout
- Mothership Zeta
This English version is compatible with both PAL & NTSC-U hardware, but not NTSC-J. It also later became Xbox One (X) backwards compatible.
