Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry no Wonderland

ドラゴンクエストモンスターズ テリーのワンダーランド

A monster-raising RPG and the first Dragon Quest Monsters game, starring young Terry from Dragon Quest VI as he enters the kingdom of Taiju to rescue his kidnapped sister Milly. Unusually, this early hybrid Game Boy Color title was initially released in a stock grey Game Boy cartridge with a later revision switching to the standard black cartridge for hybrid titles.

Description

Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry no Wonderland moves away from the mainline Dragon Quest structure with Terry not fighting directly; instead, the player builds a party of recruited monsters and sends them into turn-based battles. Wild monsters can be recruited by giving them meat during battle, then trained, stored at the Monster Farm, and used as the basis for stronger teams. It follows the

The core gameplay feature is monster breeding. Two monsters can be combined to produce an egg, creating a new monster that can inherit stats and abilities from its parents. This makes progression less about finding one fixed party and more about constantly breeding, experimenting, and passing useful skills down through generations. Most exploration happens through Traveler’s Gates / Travel Gates, which act as dungeon portals to different worlds. These areas are largely randomly generated, with monsters to fight or recruit, items to find, and a boss at the deepest floor. Between these dungeons, Terry returns to the kingdom to manage monsters, enter the arena, and work toward winning the Starry Night Tournament.

Retrospectively this era’s burgeoning genre of monster breeding titles are hard not to compare with Pokémon. Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry no Wonderland shares the broad idea of collecting and battling monsters, but its identity is more focused on breeding lines, inherited skills, and Dragon Quest-style party building. The result is a compact but very deep handheld RPG, built around repeatedly entering gates, recruiting monsters, breeding stronger offspring, and pushing further through the arena ranks. This initial release unusually came in a grey cartridge, and not the standard black cartridge for hybrid Game Boy Color games. A later revision or batch corrected this.
