A remake of the 1990 Famicom RPG, updated to the style of Dragon Quest VII, that did not get an international release.
Description
Dragon Quest IV: Michibikareshi Monotachi on PlayStation was a full remake of the 1990 Famicom original, rebuilt with two‑dimensional character sprites over pre‑rendered three‑dimensional backgrounds. The project followed the technical style of Dragon Quest VII, with redrawn Akira Toriyama artwork and a re‑orchestrated soundtrack by Kōichi Sugiyama that took advantage of the PlayStation’s audio capabilities.
The remake preserved the chapter‑based narrative structure, with four introductory episodes focusing on Ragnar, Alena, Torneko, and the sisters Meena and Maya, before uniting them under the Hero in the final chapter. The artificial intelligence system for party members was retained but refined, offering more tactical options than the Famicom version. The wagon system, casinos, and collectibles also returned, ensuring continuity with later entries in the series.
Reception in Japan was positive, with critics praising the faithful adaptation and improved presentation, though some noted that its mechanics felt conservative compared to contemporary role‑playing games on the Dreamcast and PlayStation 2. The game nonetheless sold over one million copies domestically, demonstrating the enduring popularity of the series. Plans for an international release were cancelled when Enix of America closed its U.S. operations in 2002. This left the PlayStation version as a Japan‑only title, with overseas audiences waiting years until the Nintendo DS remake.
