Universal Media Remote

The second remote for the Xbox 360 which greatly increased its usability as a media center device. This remote replaced the early Media Remotes that were included with the premium launch bundles. The remote was later replaced with a new revision to match the Xbox 360 S design.

Description

The Universal Media Remote is an official Xbox 360 accessory released a month after the console, designed to give players and home theatre users a more traditional way to control media playback. At launch, only the premium Xbox 360 bundles included a smaller Media Remote, which offered basic playback and dashboard navigation. That bundled remote was not sold separately and was limited to early adopters of the premium package. This Universal Media Remote replaced this early bundled version by expanding functionality and making media control available to all owners.

The device functions both as a remote for the Xbox 360’s dashboard and DVD playback features, and as a universal remote capable of operating televisions and other devices.
The remote featured a clean white design to match the launch console, with a central Xbox Guide button, standard playback controls, and a numeric keypad. It allowed users to navigate menus, control DVD movies, and access the console’s media centre functions without needing a controller. Infrared programming enabled compatibility with a wide range of televisions and audio systems, making it a practical tool for those who used the Xbox 360 as a hub for video and music.

Contemporary reception noted the convenience of the Universal Media Remote compared with the controller, while also recognising its broader compatibility beyond the console itself. It was successful as part of Microsoft’s push to position the Xbox 360 not only as a gaming machine but also as a living‑room entertainment centre.
