A stealth action game based on espionage and international intrigue of the high profile television show.
Description
Alias follows the secret agent Sydney Bristow as she works for a covert branch of the CIA to stop a biological weapon. Players travel to various global locations to perform undercover operations that require sneaking past guards, using high technology gadgets, and wearing different disguises to access restricted areas. Combat involves a mixture of martial arts and the use of environmental objects like broomsticks or bottles to neutralise enemies. The story fits between the second and third seasons of the Alias television show and features the original cast members who provide the voices for their characters.
The gameplay consists of distinct missions where players must manage a tension meter that determines how easily enemies detect Sydney Bristow. Mechanics include hacking into computer terminals through mini games, picking locks, and using thermal vision to see through walls. The game also features a costume system where specific outfits allow the player to enter certain zones without raising an alarm. This title is often compared to contemporaries like Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty because of its focus on avoiding direct confrontation. It serves as a stand alone entry as no sequels were produced.
At the time of release, reviews were mixed. They praised the game for its authentic atmosphere and the involvement of actors like Jennifer Garner and Victor Garber. Some critics noted that the combat felt repetitive and the camera system was occasionally difficult to manage during tight stealth sequences. In retrospect it is a typical example of a licensed game of the era. It pushed high production values and an original story that successfully capturing the feel of the television series while being an overall mediocre game experience.
