Project Gotham Racing 2 builds on the foundation of its predecessor, emphasising style and precision in driving. Developed by Bizarre Creations, the game introduces an expanded “Kudos” system, rewarding players not only for winning races but also for driving with flair e.g. powerslides, clean overtakes, and maintaining speed through corners all contribute to higher scores. This mechanic encourages stylish racing rather than simply finishing first. The game showcases the Xbox’s capabilities with detailed car models, dynamic lighting, and weather effects.

The car roster is significantly broadened, featuring over 100 licensed vehicles from manufacturers such as Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin, and BMW. Each car is modelled with attention to detail, offering distinct handling characteristics. Tracks span real‑world cities including Chicago, Edinburgh, Florence, and Yokohama, with environments recreated to capture their architectural and cultural flavour.

PGR2 is one of the earliest Xbox titles to fully exploit Xbox Live, offering online racing, leaderboards, and competitive challenges. After a slow evolution through prior generations, this was a start of consistent online gaming experiences. Local split‑screen play is also supported, ensuring accessibility for home play.

Where as the original Project Gotham came during the transition era from the Dreamcast, PGR2 launched as the Xbox was finally in full swing. It is one of the defining racing games of the Xbox era, setting the stage for Project Gotham Racing 3 on the Xbox 360.
