Description

The Xbox Controller is the default Japanese original Xbox controller. It features a reduced form factor compared to the original American model, with repositioned face buttons, smaller grips, and a more balanced weight distribution. Its layout includes two analogue sticks, a directional pad, six face buttons, and analogue triggers, arranged for improved reach and comfort. The design prioritises usability for players with regular sized hands, addressing criticisms of the American controller’s bulk and awkward spacing.

Functionally, the controller is fully compatibility with all Xbox software, with all the same buttons, just in a more logical form-factor. This Japanese controller was later adopted internationally as the Controller S, replacing the original design in most markets. It introduced refinements that later influenced global standards and lead the way to all subsequent Xbox controllers. The American design was quickly abandoned and embarrassingly forgotten about. In Japan the controller was released in two colours, the default black and this nice slightly metallic grey option. The latter was never released outside Japan with the Controller S only ever sold in black.

Upon my initial purchase of an Xbox I found it completely unusable due to the American-designed controller. This Japanese Controller resolved that and is arguably one of the best Xbox controllers, despite the Xbox 360 controller becoming so ubiquitous, I actually liked this one more. Contemporary reception praised it for its comfort and precision, contrasting sharply with negative feedback toward the American model. Retrospective commentary positions it as a turning point in Xbox hardware design, remembered for setting the template for future generations of controllers.
