Controller S (Crystal Special Edition)

A special edition of the Controller S released for the local anniversary of Microsoft’s debut console. This variant has the later internal design revisions.

Description

The Crystal Controller S, was specifically marketed in Australia as the Special Edition Crystal Controller S. It was launched in March 2004 to commemorate the 2nd Anniversary of the Xbox in the Australian and PAL markets. Unlike the Japanese “Transparent White” version, which featured a silver jewel, the Australian Special Edition is identified by its purely clear translucent shell paired with the classic Green Xbox Jewel in the centre.

The controller was originally part of the Xbox Crystal Limited Edition console bundle. March 2004. It featured the striking translucent clear console, this matching controller. The bundle was positioned as a high-end alternative to the standard black unit. While the initial March release was a “Console + Controller” pack, Microsoft later refreshed the bundle for the 2004 holiday season to include popular titles like Fable or Crimson Skies to keep the clear hardware moving off shelves. It was later released as a premium standalone accessory, marketed as a collector’s item from day one. While the “Crystal” name was used globally, the Australian SKU is particularly noted for being part of the X80 production revision, which featured the improved internal dome switches preferred by many enthusiasts. Because it was released so late in the console’s lifecycle, these bundles were among the last produced before the transition to the Xbox 360.
