A tactical FPS by Ubisoft Montreal featuring team‑based strategy, destructible environments, and objective‑driven multiplayer combat.
Description
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege is a reboot of the Rainbow Six franchise, shifting focus from narrative campaigns to competitive, multiplayer‑driven tactical play. Players take on the roles of “Operators” drawn from international counter‑terrorism units such as SAS, GIGN, Spetsnaz, and FBI SWAT. Each Operator is divided into attackers or defenders, equipped with unique gadgets that shape tactical approaches to missions.
Gameplay revolves around close‑quarters siege scenarios. Attackers must infiltrate and secure objectives such as hostages, bombs, or fortified rooms, while defenders reinforce structures, deploy traps, and repel assaults. The hallmark mechanic is environmental destruction, powered by Ubisoft’s RealBlast engine, allowing walls, floors, and ceilings to be breached or reinforced to alter the battlefield dynamically. The game did not include a traditional single‑player campaign, instead offering offline training missions and online multiplayer modes. Competitive play is central, with Ranked and Unranked playlists, seasonal events, and esports tournaments.
Ubisoft supported the game through a “games as a service” model, releasing regular expansions that add new Operators, maps, and balance updates. Reception at launch was mixed with praise for its tactical depth but criticism of limited content. But over time the continuous updates transformed Rainbow Six Siege into one of the most successful tactical shooters of its era, surpassing tens of millions of registered players worldwide. Its emphasis on teamwork, destructible environments, and Operator diversity influenced later titles in the genre and secured its place as a long‑running competitive platform.
