Gears of War was one of the first major showcases of Unreal Engine 3, helping to popularise the engine for early HD consoles. This Ultimate Edition is a ground-up remaster built by The Coalition, still using Unreal Engine 3, but with significant visual and technical upgrades.

Thematically, it still centres on desperate survival in a brutal, war-torn world where camaraderie and sacrifice are key. Like most, I found this to be a faithful and polished remaster that successfully stays true while brining the classic up to date, despite some dated design elements remaining. It provides a definitive edition of the game that popularised and inspired the cover shooter mechanic.
