Star Wars Battlefront II
A large‑scale multi-platform multiplayer shooter positioned as a sequel to the 2015 reboot. It combined cinematic single‑player storytelling with expansive multiplayer battles across the Star Wars saga.
Description
Star Wars Battlefront II sought to expand on its predecessor by offering both a narrative campaign and a broader multiplayer suite. The single‑player story followed Iden Versio, commander of Inferno Squad, an Imperial special forces unit witnessing the fall of the Empire after the Battle of Endor. The campaign spanned multiple eras and included appearances by iconic characters such as Luke Skywalker and Kylo Ren, blending original narrative with established canon.
Multiplayer was the game’s centrepiece, featuring large‑scale battles across all three cinematic eras: prequel, original, and sequel trilogies. Modes included Galactic Assault, Starfighter Assault, Heroes vs. Villains, and smaller skirmishes, with players able to control infantry, vehicles, and hero characters like Darth Maul, Rey, and Yoda. The game introduced a class‑based system for troopers, alongside progression trees for heroes and starfighters.
At launch, Battlefront II was heavily criticised for its progression model (or is that business model), which relied on loot boxes and micro-transactions tied to gameplay advantages. This controversy sparked widespread backlash, prompting EA and DICE to overhaul the system, eventually replacing it with a more traditional progression model. Over time, the game received substantial updates, adding new maps, heroes, and modes, including content from The Clone Wars and The Rise of Skywalker. Reception evolved from the initial controversy to cautious praise: while the launch was marred by gross monetisation, later updates were recognised for improving balance, depth, and variety. Ultimately Battlefront II is both a cautionary tale about modern industry monetisation practices and a demonstration of how sustained post‑launch support can rehabilitate a troubled release.
