F1 Race

F1レース

An early Japan‑only Famicom racing game from HAL Laboratory and Nintendo, offering time‑based Formula One‑style driving across multiple tracks with simple two‑gear controls, obstacle avoidance, and escalating difficulty.

Description

F1 Race was one of the Famicom’s earliest racing titles, drawing clear inspiration from Namco’s Pole Position. Players pilot a Formula One car through a series of increasingly complex circuits, each with a strict time limit. The gameplay revolves around switching between “LOW” and “HI” gears, managing speed through corners to avoid skidding, and dodging rival cars and roadside hazards. Completing the first lap of a course grants a time extension, and the goal is to survive long enough to progress through all skill levels. The game features three difficulty tiers, each with five tracks, with the final track in each tier running endlessly until the timer runs out.

The game was significant as an early showcase of smooth scrolling and responsive controls on the Famicom, and it laid groundwork for Nintendo’s later racing experiments. It eventually spawned sequels on the Famicom Disk System (Famicom Grand Prix: F1 Race and Famicom Grand Prix II: 3D Hot Rally) and a reimagined Game Boy version in 1990 that added four‑player support via the Four Player Adapter. Reception at the time was modest but positive, with praise for its challenge and arcade‑like feel. It remains a notable piece of Nintendo’s pre‑Mario Kart racing lineage.
