Kujaku Ō

じゃくおう

A command-based occult adventure built around supernatural investigation, Buddhist mythology, and menu-driven exploration, designed with a focus on narrative atmosphere and iconic manga-inspired visuals.

Description

Kujaku Ō (translated as Peacock King) is the first video game adaptation of Makoto Ogino’s seminal dark fantasy manga. Unlike the action-oriented platformers released later for the Sega Master System and Mega Drive, the Famicom version is a “Select-the-Command” adventure game. The narrative follows Kujaku, a young, beer-drinking exorcist monk of the Sannō-in temple, as he travels across Japan to suppress a rising tide of demons and ancient dark gods. The tone is heavily rooted in dark supernatural themes, blending traditional Japanese folklore with a gritty, late-80s “media mix” aesthetic.

Gameplay emphasises logical investigation and narrative progression through a static menu interface. Players navigate various locations by selecting commands such as “Move,” “Talk,” “Look,” and “Investigate.” Progress is frequently gated by puzzles that require the player to find specific items or extract information from NPCs. Combat is handled through a turn-based system where Kujaku utilizes “Kuji-in” (ritualistic hand gestures) and Buddhist spells to banish entities. The difficulty is high, requiring the player to manage a limited pool of spiritual energy and make precise choices during boss encounters to avoid a “Game Over” screen.

The game features an impressive graphical presentation for the 1988 Famicom hardware. As a 2 Mbit title (a significant size at the time), it accommodates large, detailed character portraits and cinematic transition scenes that closely mimic the art style of the original manga. The soundtrack, composed with a focus on eerie, atmospheric melodies, effectively reinforces the game’s occult tension. The visual design does not shy away from the source material’s more grotesque elements, featuring detailed sprite work for the various “Oni” and spirits Kujaku encounters.

Kujaku Ō is a sophisticated cornerstone of the Famicom’s robust “Command Adventure” library, defined by its high-quality artwork and its deep immersion in Buddhist mythology. The genre flourished in Japan but rarely saw translation for the Western NES. The game represents a successful translation of a popular adult-oriented manga into the 8-bit format, maintaining the darker tones and tactical exorcism mechanics that defined the original series. While the Sega versions (SpellCaster and Mystic Defender) achieved more international recognition due to their action gameplay, the Famicom original remains the more faithful adaptation of the manga’s investigative and ritualistic roots.
