Ganbare Goemon! Karakuri Dōchū

がんばれゴエモン!からくり道中

A top‑down action adventure that laid the groundwork for one of Konami’s longest‑running series, blending folklore, exploration, and light role‑playing elements into a distinctive early console experience.

Description

Ganbare Goemon! Karakuri Dōchū, released for the Family Computer in 1986 and later ported to the MSX2, is the second title in the Goemon line but the first to appear out the arcades. Players control Goemon, inspired by the legendary outlaw Ishikawa Goemon, as he travels through Japanese provinces in search of passes needed to progress. Each stage requires the collection of three passes, which may be hidden in boxes, sold by merchants, or tucked away in secret passages. The game’s structure is stage‑based, but each new province introduces fresh challenges, and the MSX2 version even adds additional regions and a two‑player alternating mode featuring Nezumi Kozō, a prototype for the later sidekick Ebisumaru.

Unlike later entries, which leaned into slapstick humour and surreal characters, Karakuri Dōchū presents Goemon more as a noble thief, closer to his folkloric roots. The gameplay resembles early action adventures such as The Legend of Zelda, with overhead exploration, item collection, and light combat, though it remains more linear in its stage progression. Power‑ups can be purchased or discovered, enhancing Goemon’s abilities but lost after taking damage, reinforcing a balance between risk and reward.

The game is remembered as a formative step in the evolution of the Goemon series. While it lacks the eccentric comedy and platforming focus that would later define the franchise, it is valued for establishing the thematic and mechanical foundations that Konami would expand upon in sequels like Ganbare Goemon 2 and The Legend of the Mystical Ninja.
